My daughters were ten times more exhausting than three trials with the hardest judge. They were a bit spoiled, too. We didn’t enforce the in bed—stay there philosophy my parents insisted on with a wooden spoon. And with Cami having lost her mom before we had Maggie, she had definitely been softer on our girls.

Taking a peek at the clock, it was now 9:30, and we’d been doing bedtime for an hour and a half. But my last trip upstairs was meant with the harshest tone my girls had ever heard from me. It wasn’t the words, but my pitch.

I fell back on the bed, and I saw three missed calls from Cami. She must have given up, understanding the bedtime routine we’d let our kids get accustomed to. Pulling up my texts, I read it.

Cam: Hey, honey. Just got back from dinner. We went to the same private bistro we were at last weekend. I crawled into bed. I’m done for. Apollo will bring me home by eight a.m. and will drive you into work. I love you.

Well, shit. I never went to bed without talking to Cam if we were separated at night. So, I began to shoot a text off to Miles.

Me: Did you have a good night?

I left it simple, but hell, I was pretty envious they were together, and I wasn’t with them. It normally didn’t bother me. Jack and I would go out on dates, just the two of us. We all did that. I always coveted the one-on-one time with either Jack or Cam. I certainly loved my alone time, too, if the other two were out on their own. With this being so new, I guessed the green bug of jealousy had hit me.

I was still holding my phone when a reply came through.

Miles: Yeah, I took her back to the Italian bistro we went to the other night. The owners took me in as a kid. I sent her up to her room. I had a call from my agent. Haven’t checked on her yet. I wanted to make sure she was asleep and was afraid I couldn’t keep my hands off of her if she was still awake.

You and me both, buddy, I thought.

Me: I get it. I never really put out the rules, but for now, I think we all should be together if we fuck.

I didn’t flinch at my strong language. But fucking wasn’t what we were doing. It scared me that these emotions were coming on so quickly. Before I could think longer on this, he replied.

Miles: Does that go for you two also, no fucking?

It was sent without anything, no smiley face or LOL, and I wondered if he was serious. Before I could answer him in a raw and real way, he fired off another one.

Miles: I’m kidding, Lawyer Man. If she was mine, I’d never stop fucking her.

Yeah, but it was more with Cami and me. We had always been more than just a simple fuck, from the second I’d met her, even when I was committed to another guy.
